Our entry into the fort was accompanied by the brother of last night’s guide – apparently the former had fallen foul of a tummy bug. Nice to know I’m not alone in this pursuit. Jaisalmer, the Golden City, has perhaps the most impressive fort in the land standing high out of the desert and home for 2000 locals. It’s a Mecca for tourists and abounds with market stalls to divert the traveler from his original plan. We managed to visit 2 Jain temples with the most magnificently detailed stone carvings before being seriously diverted.
Visits to purveyors of the finest jewelry, embroidery, silks, hats and a cuddly toy took their toll before we managed to break free to visit a couple of 16th century havellis where more intricate stone carvings were in evidence. Such was the scale of the last one that Billo, full of erstwhile restrained entrepreneurial zeal, burst out with “We must buy this place”.Plans are underway to relocate our families as you read. Please don’t tell them- it’ll be a nice surprise.
