Kumbalgarh
After lunch a fabulous trip into the hills to Kumbalgarh which despite being heralded as one of the finest hill forts proved to be far less popular. You wonder at the enormous effort over generations to build such an immense structure and the 36kilometers of wall that meanders off over the skyline before returning from the other direction. I can’t imagine the optimism of invading armies as they contemplate fighting their way up the steep slopes and through endless fortress gates. What a place and what a view.
The trip onward to Udaipur was a more tortuous 2 hours skirting the ‘jungle’ forest supposedly home to wolves, panthers and leopards. None were in evidence and we should have taken the opportunity to explore off the road.
